Josef Bauer and family are the fourth generation to manage the vineyards on the Hengstberg in Feuersbrunn, with the help of Viktoria, Katharina and Florian, the Fifth generation. They regard their vines also as their children. The soil on which wine is produced in the Wagram region consists of Loess in layers of up to 15 meters thick. Grüner Veltliner does well on this light soil. The soils chalk consistency has a high water retention capacity. Riesling on the other hand, is grown in vineyards with soil of a more mineral nature (red tertiary gravel deposits from the prehistoric Danube). The predominant microclimate here is characterized by the alternation of cool air from the Manhartsberg and the warm air from the Pannonic region. This ideal combination for the creation of full-bodied wines are prized for their fruit and character. In the production of white wines, the main focus is on pure fruit content. Careful picking and transport of the grapes in crates, the grapes are pressed whole and temperature-controlled fermentation is in steel tanks. This is the precondition for complex fruit tones and a great drinking experience. In this region, rain is the principal factor which determines the climate and operations in the vineyards are designed particularly around optimum water management. Important factors here are they open the grounds during the growth period. Vines are kept close to the ground and in very dry years the yields are reduced. Josef´´s focus is primarily driven to produce a natural product while maintaining high quality wines in the process.
